The Phoenix

As a mythic creature, the phoenix is popularly known; the image

Used in daily life as a brandmark, it arises from symbolic

Flames on heraldry, it enters the language of poets -briefly

Until the face of the legend is obscured by the sands of time.

It is a bird like an eagle but with brilliantly hued plumage;

It is either purple with a golden mane, or a glittering masterwork

of gold ,sable and red.

The phoenix is the only one of its kind, and it's home is in Arabia.

At the end of a cycle as it feels death come close,

It gathers a nest of fragrant spices, on which to rest and sing

it's last song .

The dawn rays of Sol ignite the nest and both

Birth pyre and the phoenix are burnt to ash.

From this ash comes a worm,

In three days through chrysalis it blossoms into a new phoenix.

The new creature's first act is to gather the bones of it's ancestor.

Accompanied then,by a funeral cortege of many birds , processes to

Heliopolis (the City of thc Sun) on the Nile to be recieved with much

ceremony and burial rites by priests of the Sun.

The Phoenix buries its forbear's bones in the temple,

and takes flight to Arabia, its rebirth fulfilled.

The threads of this story first appear in ancient Greek literature,

In Herodotus' report of Egypt (about 2400 years ago).

When staying at Heliopolis, he was shown the bird in pictures;

(and "phoenix" may be due to confusing it's name with that of the date palm

which is also "phoenix" in Greek)

with which it is often associated).

In time, the legend gathered embellishment,

About 1600 years ago the poets Claudian
and also Lacantius

added the idea of a death by fire.
